Yogyakarta

January 21-26, 2026

Yogyakarta is a super relaxed, beautiful city. Indonesia is a republic, yet Yogyakarta has a Sultan who also lives there.

On the first evening, we were at a central square where there are many food stalls, brightly colored pedal cars, and a large lawn. Couples, families, and groups of friends gather here in the evening, creating a cool atmosphere.

January 22, 2026: we rode our motorbike to the Borobudur Temple, which is the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world and was very impressive.

January 23, 2026: we both felt under the weather and took a day off…

January 24, 2026: we visited the nearby Merapi Volcano and took a tour there. The Merapi has erupted several times in recent years, and we also visited a museum where we could see the effects.

January 25, 2026: we were out and about a lot. We got up at 5:30 AM and went to a cave called Jomblang Cave. The trip was super quick. At the cave, you have to rappel down about 60 meters, then you hike for about half an hour to the other end of the cave. That was our highlight so far; it was an amazing experience and a natural spectacle when the sun rose over the cave exit and individual rays fell into the darkness. Afterwards, we visited a mini waterfall and then went back to Merapi because we wanted to see the lava that was spewing from the top. Unfortunately, it was cloudy, so we couldn’t see anything. We returned to our accommodation at 10:30 PM.
