Cambodia (Day 72-84)

).</p><p>Afterward, we took a break in a café with air conditioning. It was very hot and exhausting.</p><p>We then continued to a market to check it out. Later, we went to a vegetarian restaurant for lunch. Since we didn't have much else planned, except for later going to the Night Market, we went for cake.</p><p>At the Night Market, there was even a boxing ring in the middle of the market. However, on that day, there were no adult fighters, just two little boys.</p><h3>Day 79 Journey to Koh Rong</h3><p>In the morning, we had breakfast again in our accommodation, and it was the same as the day before. When we wanted to check out, the landlord wanted to charge us $18. We had already paid $14 at the beginning, which surprised me, as it said $25 on Booking.com. He wanted $18 because we had eaten two more flatbreads. I told him that breakfast was included. We had a short discussion, and in the end, his colleague came and said it was okay that we only paid $11. Of course, we lost a few minutes because of this, and I was already worried that we would miss the bus. I quickly called a tuk-tuk. But the tuk-tuk drove extremely slowly, the driver stalled it a few times, and the city traffic was dreadful. In the end, we arrived right at 11 and caught our bus. However, about half an hour later, 3 more people got on. The younger woman seemed sick and was almost carried into the vehicle. Of course, I was lucky that she sat directly behind me and often wrapped her arms around my headrest. After about 3 hours, we finally arrived at the port. We had to wait a short while for our speedboat. Shortly after 3, we finally departed. However, the boat turned around halfway to pick up a family at the harbor. We arrived at Koh Rong around 4:00 and first went to have something to eat. After that, we walked to our accommodation. However, the path was not very nice and shocked me a bit. Everything was littered, and chickens and dogs were running around everywhere. After checking in, we found out that there was another power outage. Luckily, the water was still running, and I could take a shower. After a short break, we went shopping again and bought muesli for breakfast (got to save money!). On the way back, it started to rain, and we got a bit wet. After that, we didn’t do much, as Jan unfortunately felt a bit queasy again, as he had probably eaten something bad. He will probably soon become a vegan!?</p><h3>Day 80 Koh Rong</h3><p>We had our muesli for breakfast in bed and then set out to rent a scooter.</p><p>We didn't have any plans and just drove around. Our first stop was at a beautiful beach with white sand and turquoise water. Unfortunately, the beach was a bit littered.</p><p>After this stop, we continued on the only proper road here. We stopped at another beach but moved on right away, as it wasn’t that nice. Then we followed a sign that led us to a waterfall. On the way, we saw water buffalo lying in the water and grazing. We had to walk the last stretch to the waterfall. After 20 minutes, we arrived at the beautiful waterfall. Moreover, we were lucky to be completely alone there. We spent a while there and cooled off in the water. Afterwards, we began our way back and went in search of a restaurant. Since most of them were closed, we decided to head back.</p><p>We finally ate at a restaurant near our accommodation and then returned. After a little break, I went for a run. Jan picked me up later, and we drove to the beach together to watch the sunset.</p><h3>Day 81 Koh Rong</h3><p>After breakfast in bed, we walked to the beach. After half an hour, we arrived at a beautiful beach. We were almost alone there, which was certainly because it was the rainy season. We swam a bit in the sea and sunbathed on the beach. After a few hours, we went to a beach bar for lunch. There, we were visited by a little dog who wanted a bit of our food. After returning to our accommodation, we took a little break and then went for a mango shake. Later, we strolled along the beach, and I petted many dogs again.</p><p>In the evening, we had delicious falafel.</p><h3>Day 82 Travel to Koh Rong Sanloem</h3><p>First, we packed our things and had breakfast in bed again. Just after 10:00, we had to check out of our accommodation. To kill the waiting time, we sat in a restaurant, as our boat was not scheduled to depart until 12:30. The journey took no more than 15 minutes, and we got a bit splashed by the waves. Upon arriving at the island, we first brought our things to the accommodation. From there, we went to a restaurant with many vegan dishes. After that, we explored the island a bit and realized that our part of the island was not connected to the other part by a road. Our half of the island was so small that you needed a boat to get to the other part. After our short exploration, I laid back on the beach again. Later, we watched the sunset and went to the same restaurant for dinner. In our little wooden cabin, Jan discovered a huge spider in the evening. It was eliminated without protective gear by employing a convoluted Asian version of spider hunting and flushed down the toilet. Personally, I was for leaving it there. Luckily, we had a mosquito net over the bed, as the whole room was filled with mosquitoes. Unfortunately, we only had a fan, and it was pretty warm in the cabin.</p><h3>Day 83 Travel to Kampot</h3><p>Our boat left at 8:30, and we arrived on the mainland shortly after nine. Since we had booked our minivan for half past nine, we went to 7/11 again. After that, we headed for the bus station. A girl there told us that the minivan would leave at 11:00. It actually arrived at 11:30, and we had to wait over an hour for it. The ride took about 2 and a half hours, and half of the route was just gravel. The path felt like it had one hole after another, and we were shaken thoroughly. Upon arriving in Kampot, we first started looking for something to eat. After eating, we took a tuk-tuk to our accommodation, as it had started to rain by then.</p><p>After a short break, we went to a café, drank Khmer coffee, and had a piece of cake. I liked the coffee, but Jan didn't enjoy it that much. After that, we walked to the gym and worked out. Later, we had dinner in our hostel, although my food sadly tasted burnt.</p><h3>Day 84 Kampot</h3><p>In the morning, we both went for a jog and then had breakfast behind our hostel.</p><p>We rented a scooter at our hostel and drove to a pepper farm nearby. Kampot is world-famous for its pepper. At the farm, we got a tour, and much was explained about growing pepper. At the end of the tour, there was a pepper tasting. It was really cool, and the pepper was very delicious. Afterward, we went to the farm's sky bar, where Jan tried the pepper ice cream.</p><p>By the way, our guide spoke a bit of German, and we chatted a little after the tour.</p><p>Next, we drove back to the city to eat. Coincidentally, we passed a vegan restaurant where we had also had lunch.</p><p>After that, it started raining again, and we went back to the hostel. Here, we took a little break first. At five o'clock, we went to another hostel to join a free city tour. The tour was led by a Canadian and a man from Cambodia. It was really informative, and we learned a lot about Cambodia. I found it most interesting that Cambodia had developed so much only in the last few years and had experienced significant economic growth. For example, for most people, it hasn't been long since cars existed in Cambodia, as in the past, only wealthy people owned cars.</p><p>Additionally, the guide told us that the bird noises we heard weren't even real. They had speakers with bird sounds placed in trees and buildings to attract birds. These birds then build nests from their saliva, and from these nests, a soup is made. This soup is supposedly supposed to have healing properties. Due to so many nests being destroyed and not many remaining, the nests are sold for a lot of money.</p><p>After the tour, we went back to the city and found an Indian restaurant where we once again enjoyed curry and delicious naan.</p>

Day 72 Journey to Siem Reap

Our alarm went off at 5:30 today. We walked straight to the airport, which was thankfully only ten minutes away. At the airport, we dropped off our backpacks and went through security to the waiting area, as our flight departed at 7:30.

We landed in Bangkok at 9:00, retrieved our backpacks, and booked our bus ride to Siem Reap. Unfortunately, we had been a bit too optimistic. We booked the ride for 10:00, but it took us 40 minutes to reach the bus stop. We arrived at 10:20 and the driver said we could take the bus at 11:00 for an additional 500 Baht. We paid it and were relieved that we didn't have to buy a completely new ticket. This gave us enough time to have breakfast. For me, it was one last Pad Thai in Thailand. Right on time at 11:00, the trip began. After 2 hours, we took a short break and then continued to the border, where we had to get off the bus and go through border control. Jan and I didn't really know what we were supposed to do here. A new officer came each time, picking us up and taking us to the next stop. They even took a picture of us, probably to send it for the next control. At the first station, we got a stamp in our passport, and they took another picture of us. Next, we had to apply for our visa. However, we hadn't withdrawn any money yet, and they only accepted cash here. So, I had to wait with both passports while Jan went to withdraw money. This took a while as the next ATM was very far away. However, everything moved quickly after that. We paid the $30 and filled out the application forms. After that, we got another stamp and were allowed to continue. At the exit, a man picked us up again and took us to our bus. The subsequent drive on a truly bad road lasted about 3 hours. It was clear that Cambodia was a very poor country. At first, I was surprised that the driver's seat was on the left side until Jan told me that Cambodia had switched back to driving on the right. Upon arriving in Siem Reap, a driver immediately approached us wanting to take us to our accommodation. When I asked him how much it would cost, he said the ride was free if we did the temple tour with him the next day. However, we were still unsure about what we wanted to do the next day. So, I offered him some money, but he didn't want it. In the end, he gave me his number and asked us to contact him as he really needed a job. We decided to write to him later and book the tour with him because he asked for a fair price and really needed the money.

Afterward, we set out to find something to eat.
