Schölcher, Martinique

Our quarter in Schölcher is indeed very close to a beautiful beach, but the accommodation is - to put it mildly - a bit run-down. Regardless, we have to deal with it. After my daily morning swim and our lavish breakfast with eggs, muesli, cheese, jam, tomatoes, cucumbers, and coffee, we head to the Jardin de Balata. This botanical garden is not far from Fort France. It is one of the most beautiful gardens in the Caribbean. On a three-hectare garden area, there are about 3000 different species of plants, hummingbirds, fish, lizards, and much more. You should be free from vertigo for the suspension bridge, which is positioned at the height of the treetops. Babsi was brave enough to try it, and I viewed the suspension bridge from below - that was also okay. The journey continues to Saint-Pierre, with a spontaneous stop at a small river. We see many people bathing in it as if it were a pool. There we notice two massage tables standing right in the river. Now that's a massage of a different kind, and soon we're changed and on the table enjoying a very pleasant 20-minute Ayurvedic massage. Relaxed, we continue and arrive in Saint-Pierre after 1 PM. Saint-Pierre is a coastal town that was destroyed by an eruption of the Pelée volcano in 1902. Since its reconstruction, the town has become a popular tourist spot. The beaches there often have black sand - volcanic sand. We take a break at Le Café du Marché and treat ourselves to coffee, cake, and ice cream. For the return journey, we take the coastal road. This takes us over Le Carbet and Bellefontaine back to Schölcher. Today we still need to clean the car since we have to return it tomorrow. One more time to our really beautiful beach and into the water for a swim. To conclude, we enjoy a wonderful sunset.
