Today we are leaving our beautiful apartment in Sainte Anne and heading towards Tartane in the north of Martinique. A stop in Le Robert shows us a huge barrier in the sea to protect against the brown algae, which is becoming a major problem throughout the Caribbean. As long as the brown algae float in the sea, they provide food for many small sea creatures. They suffocate the coral reefs and on land, they smell of sulfur. Our journey continues as we search for the pink mangroves. We end up in a remote area in the Trinité region. After a short walk, we stand in front of a small ferry. How do we get to the other side? There’s no one around, and we look at each other slightly perplexed, as it wasn't written anywhere that we needed to cross the water. We look around and spot two men, whom we ask. Yes, indeed, we have to take the small ferry ourselves to get across. Once we've said that, we are already on the ferry making our way to the other side. It was a bit cumbersome, but the sight of the pink mangroves made it worth it. These are mangroves standing in pink water. The water is pink because the algae Dunaliella Salina produce so much beta carotene that it colors the water. A fascinating natural spectacle. We continue our journey and arrive at Anse la Perche beach in Trinité. We spend another 3 hours there, and then we head to Schölcher to the new quarter. We arrive in Schölcher and get ready for the evening when suddenly we feel a tremor and everything starts to shake. Later we read in the news that there was an earthquake near Fort de France with a magnitude of 5.4. We look for a restaurant on the beach of Madiana and find a nice place to eat, enjoying the view of the sea with the sunset and the full moon.
