Today we have no major tour planned and it’s time to take the little 03 ml out for a proper outing, today we’re going to the beach among other places.

Well-packed, I drive solo to Djupivogur, with countless blue and violet lupines blooming along the Ring Road. Ahead of me, a 'Follow Me' sign blinks, not from the DJU airport but from the convoy laying down asphalt. Traffic is managed in a single lane by the Follow Me vehicle, and after a few minutes, I am escorted with 3 other vehicles.

I leave Djupivogur towards the bird reserve and drive directly to the fine black sand beach along RWY18.

Some may not understand it, but it feels incredible when your dream becomes a reality, driving along the beach, right by the waves with the sun on your face.

I make a few laps, park the little one right by a rock that was completely washed over yesterday at high tide, gather my camera again, and enjoy the moment on the rock.

Everything packed away, engine on, clutch pulled - SNAP - the clutch cable snaps indeed, here in the deep loose sand, several meters away from the dry dunes, while the tide has already crept well up to the rocks. My pulse rises temporarily, and I try to gather my thoughts and weigh my options; pushing, temporary repair, operating the cable by hand or foot - all seem less feasible, so I turn off the engine, engage a gear, press the starter button while accelerating - and here we go. I take a couple more laps, stopping is not a real option anymore, and I drive cautiously towards the cottage. There was something else, right, the construction site - I’m lucky with my timing, there is no traffic behind me and it looks like things could start moving in a minute ahead. Just before I need to stop, the Follow Me moves, and everything else goes smoothly.

Upon arriving at the cottage, there’s a coffee in the sun, and we decide that I deserve a bath, so off to Djúpavogskörin, the small hot pot just a few kilometers from us. The convoy has renewed the well over 2 km in record time and has already finished for the day, allowing us to pass without stopping.

We’re lucky, there’s no one at the hot pot, and the water is pleasantly warm. Across the street, workers are busy drilling into the hot water vein to provide an ample hot water supply for nearby Djupivogur. After an hour of relaxing splashing around, we notice that the inflow has dried up, hopefully just temporarily due to the work on the other side.

In the evening, I quickly order a new clutch cable and park the 03 back in the trailer.

stay tuned...
