Around Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Partenkirchen, known as Partanum, was a Roman settlement that was increasingly developed for trade relations. In the high Middle Ages, the Fugger family utilized this important trading station. In 1936, the National Socialists combined Garmisch and Partenkirchen to host the Winter Olympics.

At the Olympic ski jump in Garmisch, one can comfortably hike the 700m long, partially 80m deep Partnach Gorge.

The natural highlight at the Zugspitze is certainly the Eibsee, with its color changes caused by sediments, groundwater sources, and the reflection of the mountain panorama. The lake is about 35m deep and does not exceed 20° water temperature. One can walk around the lake and has a wonderful view of the Zugspitze at some points.

The Zugspitze, at 2962m, is the highest mountain in Germany and the highest peak of the Wetterstein mountains. With the cable car, you reach the top in about 10 minutes. Accommodation options are offered at the Knorrhütte for those wishing to ascend.

A comfortable ascent to the Laber, 1684m high, is provided by the nostalgic Laber cable car, a large cabin two-cable lift, which was first put into operation in 1957.

The Catholic parish church of Oberammergau, St. Peter and Paul, is a significant example of southern German Baroque architecture. It was built in 1749 and is the centerpiece of the Passion Play traditions. The next performances will take place in 2030.

Another delightful tour leads through Mittenwald, known for its long tradition of violin making, across Elmau Castle to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The first G7 summit took place here in 2015.
