Day 11: Ubud and the Southern Tip of Bali

Today our day started relatively relaxed. After breakfast, we left around 8:30 AM. It was actually a shame that we were only at this hotel for such a short time; at least what we saw was very interesting with a lot of greenery.

Our first destination today was the town center of Ubud and the market. After visiting the Ubud Palace, Puri Agung, we had about an hour to walk around on our own.

After a relatively short drive, we arrived at the Goa Gajah Temple (also known as Elephant Cave) in Bedulu.

Overall, there are about 20,000 temples in Bali (plus many private ones).

After lunch at a restaurant with very large and impressive statues, we made our way to the southern tip of the island to the Ulu Batu Temple.

The Ulu Batu Temple is located on a cliff overlooking the sea. This temple is also one of the tourist hotspots. Accordingly, it was quite crowded there.

The number of tourists was only surpassed by the monkeys that lived there. However, they were also quite cheeky and aggressive and stole one or two things from the tourists - especially sunglasses and water bottles. Our guide had armed himself with a stick right at the beginning to keep them at bay.

After visiting the temple, we watched a Kecak performance (fire dance), a traditional Balinese dance.

Afterwards, we drove to Jimbaran. There we had dinner at a restaurant right on the beach - grilled fish and seafood, and for the three non-fish eaters, there was chicken.

Our tour ended at a small hotel in Sanur that we booked for our overnight stay. Of course, it was no comparison to the rather luxurious hotels of the last few days. But it was clean and tidy and the hosts were very nice.

This also marked the end of the first part of our journey, and we had to say goodbye to our guide.
