Day 3 - Hanoi: Sparkly Unicorns, Monkeys, and the Art of Pearl Cultivation

Published: 20.12.2024

Today our adventure began early: At 8:30 AM we were picked up by the tour bus that took us to the legendary Halong Bay. The drive lasted three hours, but our tour guide Thong, a young and funny guy, kept us entertained with jokes and interesting information. He was the perfect manager for the day – and that with a packed schedule!

Our first stop was a pearl farm. There, we were shown how small mother-of-pearl beads are implanted into oysters so that they develop into sparkling pearls out of “self-defense.” I found it scientifically fascinating – Ursula, my sparkly unicorn, was of course completely enchanted by the shimmering results. I mean, if they had sold her glitter in bottles, she would have taken everything home.

Onboard our ship, we first had a delicious seafood lunch. Rejuvenated, we headed to the first island: Ti Top. There we had the choice: either climb to the summit or chill on the beach. Given the crowds, I opted for the relaxed option and treated myself to a fresh coconut. Ursula wanted to climb first, but then the coconut trend seemed more appealing to her as well.

Our next stop was a highlight: We took Sampans – small rowing boats where the rower coolly stands at the back – through a cave into a hidden lagoon. The scenery was straight out of a dream – and as a bonus, we spotted the local monkeys. A little acrobatic, a bit cheeky, but above all, super entertaining. Ursula commented: “A sparkly unicorn would be the cherry on top!”

The final station was Hang Sung Sot, a massive cave filled with stalagmites and stalactites. Ursula's imagination ran wild here: she saw hearts, animals, and yes, even Santa Claus! I'm not sure if it was the magic of the cave or Ursula's needed midday nap, but her enthusiasm was infectious.

After a long day, we took the bus back to Hanoi. Of course, a detour to the Night Market was a must before heading back to the hotel and packing our bags. Tomorrow it’s off to Hoi An! We can’t wait to see what awaits us there.

Stay tuned for more adventures
