After a rather modest amount of sleep at a last-minute campground, we decided to kick off the day in style: with breakfast… in the mall of Grande Prairie. 😎 Nothing says “outdoor adventure” quite like breakfast between a drugstore and a mobile phone shop, right?
Rejuvenated and with a few spontaneous shopping treasures in tow, we set off towards Jasper National Park. The weather on the way? Well, let's just say: it was more “Netflix-and-blanket” than “postcard idyllic.” So we kept our stops short and focused on the essentials: covering kilometers.
But hardly had we arrived in Jasper when magic happened: the sky opened up, the sun came out – and with it, the local wildlife! 🐏 A whole herd of bighorn sheep posed by the roadside as if they had been waiting for our arrival. And as soon as we reached the campground, there was an even larger herd of wapitis hanging around.
Could this possibly be related to the name of our campsite? Coincidence or secret wapiti conspiracy – who knows. In any case, we settled in at the “Wapiti Campground,” made our camper feel at home, and whipped up delicious burritos for dinner. 🌯
Later, when we stepped outside again, I could hardly believe my eyes: right next to our camper stood a wapiti lady, as if she had made a reservation with us. And not just her – our Dutch neighbor was already there, studying the scene with the dedication of a wildlife documentary filmmaker. Naturally, we got into conversation – camping brings people together after all.
With a nice chat, a full belly, and plenty of animal company, this day came to an end. Now we know: In Jasper, you’re never really alone – sometimes the neighbors graze right outside your door. 🦌✨
