Reykjavik Day 2

Day 2: Reykjavík
My night ends at 6 AM. I can’t lie down anymore and I have slept for 7 hours. Fortunately, it is not as cold in the early morning as expected. So it's enough to heat up early to feel comfortable. Overall, we sleep well.
After breakfast, we start our day. I purchase the tickets in advance for the 9 AM entry at the Perlan Museum. The museum, powered by geothermal sources, features several exhibitions on the themes of ice and fire. We first learn about the history of Iceland and its volcanoes and receive information about native animals. The first show depicts the eruption of Fagradalsfjall near Reykjavík. Before March 2021, there hadn’t been a volcanic eruption in this area for 800 years. Since then, several eruptions have occurred near Fagradalsfjall. It’s astonishing how close people used to get to the lava flows. Afterwards, we proceed to a new show at the museum.  We take our seats in a small room, facing a 280° screen, as our interactive journey begins inside a volcano 2000 meters deep down into the magma chamber. It somewhat resembles a VR glasses event. Eventually, the volcano spits us out as lava again.
After the hot show, we cool down in the ice cave at minus 15°C. Here, real glacial ice can be admired. Even the ash markings show past volcanic eruptions. Fortunately, we are
well prepared, wearing hats, scarves, and gloves, much to the amusement of the guide. On the roof of the building, there is a panoramic view of the city of Reykjavík.  Finally, a planetarium shows us the formation of the Northern Lights. We have to be careful not to fall asleep in the comfortable chairs.
We leave the museum and prepare our lunch in the camper. Then a short drive takes us to the harbor in Reykjavík.  From there, we walk to the city center.  The city is modern with many small and colorful houses, mostly made from wood, stone, and metal. Many sculptures and painted walls decorate the area. Centrally located is the Hallgrimskirkja, a modern church built in 1945. The church is the second tallest building in Iceland.
Afterwards, we stroll along the harbor by the Sun Voyager, a stainless steel sculpture of a Viking ship, as well as the Harpa, the opera house.
We are exhausted when we return to our camper around 4:30 PM. Back at the campsite, I cook dinner and we sit outside for a while.  The weather is pleasant whenever the sun shows up. Today is mostly cloudy.
