A day full of natural forces and tranquil moments

Today we explored the stunning coast of Portugal and were captivated by the sheer power of nature and the unique beauty of the landscape. Despite the overcast sky and fresh wind, the day offered us unforgettable experiences.

Our first stop was Praia da Marinha, one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world. At least, that’s what a sign at the parking lot says. Here, spectacular rock formations rise from the normally turquoise water (today gray like the sky) and create a postcard-perfect scene that one will not easily forget. Particularly impressive are the natural stone arches that the sea has shaped over millennia into the limestone.

Some of these arches rise majestically from the water while others can be seen in the cliffs themselves, appearing almost sculpted by artist's hands. It is a landscape to simply admire, and we spent quite some time observing the powerful waves crashing against the rocks.

Shortly thereafter, we made our way to Praia de Albandeira, a hidden gem of the Algarve. Compared to the famous Praia da Marinha, it is smaller and quieter, yet offers no less beauty. Here too, we were fascinated by the impressive rock formations and the iconic stone arch that decorates the coast like a natural frame.

The rugged coastline and the foaming water had an incredibly soothing, almost hypnotic quality.

A special highlight of our day was the visit to the small chapel Nossa Senhora da Rocha, perched on a narrow cliff about 35 meters above the Atlantic, a place full of peace and history.

Originally built in the 16th century by fishermen seeking refuge there, they prayed to the Madonna for protection at sea. This historical connection to the sea and the perils of seafaring gives the chapel a special symbolic significance.

Over time, the chapel became an important pilgrimage site where people express their concerns and gratitude. This is particularly visible in the shells that visitors leave at the windows and trees around the chapel.

This gesture, known as ex-voto, symbolizes prayers, wishes, or thanks for fulfilled requests. Often the shells bear small messages and reflect the close bond of people with the Madonna and the sea. Apart from its spiritual significance, the chapel also impresses with its spectacular location and the view of the beaches Praia da Senhora da Rocha and Praia Nova, which are connected by a tunnel.

This place, unique both religiously and in its landscape, invites one to pause. The view from the chapel over the vast ocean is breathtaking – it’s no wonder the chapel is also very popular for weddings and special ceremonies.

From the chapel, we made our way down to the beach, where we took a well-deserved break at the restaurant Vilarinho. The small snack bar was simple but tasty, and with the view of the beach, the food tasted even better.

Right by the beach, just a few steps from the restaurant Vilarinho, you can find the fishermen's huts and traditional fishing boats. In this part of the Algarve, fishing remains an important part of life. As we left the restaurant, it was fascinating to see the fishermen meeting there, preparing their boats to later bring them out to sea. This authentic scene gives the place a very special atmosphere, both rustic and lively.

In the late afternoon, we returned to our apartment, filled with beautiful impressions. Days like these make traveling so special, the blend of rugged nature, cultural highlights, and culinary delights.
