A Day in Loulé and Surroundings: Markets, History, and a Touch of Luxury

Today, our journey took us to Loulé, a charming town in the heart of the Algarve known for its markets, history, and vibrant atmosphere. The day began at the weekly market, which greeted us with an explosion of colors and scents. Fresh, local vegetables and fruits in every imaginable variety, along with local specialties – a paradise for both gourmets and photographers alike. We couldn't resist and bought some fruits and vegetables.

The town was bustling with life today – Loulé attracted not only many tourists but also numerous locals. Around the market, there was a lively activity.

People running their errands, friends bumping into each other on the street, and groups sitting in cozy street cafes chatting lively.

The scene conveyed a warm, almost familial feeling. It seemed that the market was not just a place to shop, but also a gathering point where people enjoyed their time together. The tables at the cafés were well occupied; we certainly couldn’t find a spot.

Afterwards, we strolled through the Loulé Market Hall, which is the heart of the city’s daily life. In addition to fresh fish – directly from the Atlantic – we also found meat, spices, and handicrafts. The mix of tradition and vibrant everyday life creates a very special atmosphere.

After the market, we immersed ourselves in history. A walk through the old town took us to winding alleys, whitewashed and colorful houses, and finally to the Castle of Loulé, which gave us a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The Castle of Loulé is an impressive historical fortress. It was originally built in the 12th century by the Moors when Loulé was an important strategic stronghold. After the Christian reconquest in the 13th century, the castle was further expanded and took on its current form.

Over the centuries, the fortress became surrounded by houses and other buildings, making it increasingly disappear from the cityscape. To highlight its significance as a cultural heritage, several houses in front of the castle were torn down in the 20th century to reveal the castle again and better showcase its historical character.

Today, parts of the outer city walls, three of the original towers, and the castle courtyard remain. Inside is the Loulé City Museum, which displays archaeological finds from the region, including ceramics, coins, and other artifacts. These tell the exciting story of Loulé and the Algarve.

From the castle walls, there is a wonderful view of the old town and the surrounding landscape. The uncovering of the castle has contributed to making this place not only a piece of living history but also a beautiful and inviting spot for visitors.

On our way back, we took a break at a small chestnut stand, where we enjoyed the freshly roasted chestnuts – a delicious snack that fits perfectly with the autumn season.

In the afternoon, we moved on to a more modern note. We made a detour to the Algarve Designer Outlet, a shopping paradise with great offers. Here, I treated myself to new golf shoes – perfect for the next rounds on the golf courses of the Algarve.

The crowning finale was the sunset at Praia do Castelo, one of our favorite beaches near our apartment. Even if it wasn't as intense as in the previous days, the colors of the sky reflected in the sea, creating a moment of pure magic – a perfect ending to this eventful day.
