Start into the New Year

On New Year's Eve, we arrived at our last stop in Zanzibar: Nungwi. The place is known for beautiful beaches, many tourists (especially Italians), and a huge New Year's Full Moon Party in Kendwa Rocks, not far from Nungwi. We also planned to go there and spend the remaining days in Zanzibar mainly on the beach.

In Nungwi, we had another nice accommodation - Casa Umoya. This hotel also had a garden with many trees, hammocks, and porch swings (and those who know me know, I love porch swings!). We had a small cottage with a bathroom and a small veranda (unfortunately without a porch swing) for ourselves. We spent the remaining New Year's Eve on the beach and preparing for the evening.

The plan was to first have dinner on the beach and then walk four kilometers to the big party on the beach. The first part went as planned. However, the DJ in the bar next to our restaurant played such good music that we decided to save the way and the entrance fee for the party and instead just enjoy some cocktails. By midnight, the bar had also filled up and a big campfire was lit - all in all, it was a successful New Year's Eve.

The remaining days passed by quickly. As planned, we spent a lot of time on the beach. But we also visited a hatchery for the water turtles living on Zanzibar and went on a sunset cruise with a dhow. Although we didn't see a sunset that night, we were compensated with an even more beautiful sunset that we were able to observe on another evening during dinner.

On January 4th, we set off early in the morning back to Stone Town, from where we took a ferry to Dar es Salaam on the coast of Tanzania - a stop on the way to Uganda.

Starting Into the New Year in Nungwi

On December 31st, we moved to Nungwi in the North of Zanzibar. It is known for beautiful beaches, tourists (especially Italians), and a huge New Year's Eve Full Moon Party in Kendwa Rocks, which is nearby. We had also planned to go to the party and spend most of our last days on Zanzibar on the beach.

Again, we had a very nice hotel with a garden with lots of trees and bushes, hammocks, and porch swings (and those who know me know, I love porch swings). We had our own little cabin with a bathroom and a porch (however, without a swing). We spent the day of December 31st on the beach and getting ready for the night. The plan was to eat at a small seafood barbecue place on the beach and then make our way to the party, which was about 4km away.

The first part of the evening went as planned. However, the bar next to the restaurant played such good music that we decided to ditch the party and save the entrance fee to have some cocktails at that bar. And that is what we did. Close to midnight, more and more people came to the bar and at midnight, a big campfire was lit in front of the bar - all in all, we had a pretty good night!

The remaining days on Zanzibar passed by far too quickly. We spent most of them on the beach, but we also visited the 'zoo' where small turtles are nursed before they are released to the sea to protect the species. Also, we went on a sunset cruise on a dhow. However, that night we did not see a sunset, instead, we saw the most beautiful sunset another night during dinner.

On January 4th, we took a taxi back to Stone Town from where we took a ferry to Dar es Salaam on the coast of Tanzania. Dar was a stop on our way to Uganda, where Maria has been living for the past two and a half years and where I would stay with her for a couple of weeks.
