Day 232 and 233 in Bako National Park

Publié: 25.11.2017

My alarm clock rang at 7 o'clock this morning. I wanted to take the bus at 8 o'clock towards Bako National Park, to have as much time as possible in the park to search for the proboscis monkeys. Last night, I had booked an overnight stay in the national park's hostel, but something went wrong with the payment. Well, I will see if at least the reservation worked out. After a hasty breakfast, I headed to the bus station. On the way, I made a stop at an ATM to withdraw cash. But the machine just wouldn't give me any. As time was running out, I had to make do with the money I had in my pocket. When I arrived at the bus stop, I was told after 10 minutes of waiting that the 8 o'clock bus was canceled due to a technical defect somewhere along the route. The next bus would be at 9:20. Well, that's how it is, so I went back to the hostel to wait. On the second attempt, the bus finally arrived, and it was even on time. However, we only departed at 10 minutes before 10 because the previous bus was canceled, and we stopped every few meters for people to get on or off. So the bus took 80 minutes instead of the advertised 40. The national park is not accessible by land, only by boats. So now it was time to board the boat. But there was another surprise waiting there. Due to low tide, the next boat would only depart in 2 and a half hours, when the tide would start rising again. We should have arrived here before 11 o'clock to get into the national park in the morning. At least now I had time to sort out my hostel situation. My reservation had arrived, and I could pay in cash. And then it was time to wait. There was nothing to do, and it started raining at that moment. A morning to forget. But the rain had a silver lining. It raised the water level slightly faster, and we only had to wait for 1 and a half hours. The rain also stopped as soon as we boarded the boat. After a 30-minute boat ride, we finally reached the national park. Now it was time to quickly check in at the hostel and then head out on one of the many trails. I chose one that was supposed to have a relatively high chance of seeing the monkeys. By that time, the sun had even come out, and it was nice and humid. But the walk first along the beach and then through the forest was fun. The path was developed on the beach, partially in the forest, and partially not. The rain had not been kind to the trail, and I had to constantly avoid large puddles and balance on logs to keep my feet from getting soaked. But it was fun. At the end of my path, I reached another beach. Unfortunately, I didn't find the proboscis monkeys I was looking for. But the beach where I ended up was quite beautiful.
