At the Center of Crete

From the palace complex in Phaistos and our terrace café, we drive back to the northern part of the island of Crete. On the way, we plan to make a detour in the mountains to a special olive tree. We leave the main road and take small country roads. Suddenly, our road turns into a dirt path, and a detour is closed due to construction work. So, we turn back and lament the poor tree that will not have the pleasure of our acquaintance. However, we do manage to make a detour to our next destination. This is facilitated by an unfinished decaying bridge construction, likely due to missing funds, which lightly connects the main road with the surroundings, allowing us to reach the stop without detours. Therefore, we now stop at the geographical center of the island of Crete. It is a small rock with a chapel on it located in a village. The chapel itself is locked and looks more like a small house with a cross on the roof. So, we stand at the center of Crete, walk around the rock and can be sure that this tourist-poor spot in the midst of the mountains of Crete is visited and noticed by only a few people. Yet, we were here, and after spending a sunny afternoon on the terrace of our holiday apartment (Ezith Luxury Apartments) in a residential area of Heraklion, we conclude our short holiday on the island of Crete the next day with our return flight, taking many impressions of the Minoan culture home with us.
