We live here on a permaculture farm, 15 hectares in size, with forests and gardens.
Permaculture (derived from 'permanent agriculture') means utilizing everything you have in the garden (the biotope) as effectively as possible, with minimal changes. For example, if you have a house with a garden, you would plant tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, or passion fruits where plenty of sunlight shines to take advantage of the warmth. In shaded areas due to tall trees, you would prefer to plant legumes, spinach, carrots, and mushrooms. This way, everything grows well without significantly altering nature or requiring much human intervention.
You can also do even more; for instance, you could plant a climbing plant like grapes or tomatoes with herbs like basil or arugula underneath to cover the soil and protect it from drying out or flooding. This way, plants support each other, and we humans don't have to work as hard.
It gets even easier with animals; for example, if you have chickens, you can give them food scraps, and they will lay eggs for you, so less waste is produced, and you always have fresh eggs.
Careful planning is key in deciding where to plant plants so that they can help each other; for instance, if you have aphids, thyme will fend them off. Or if you have snails eating your vegetables, you can get ducks that will eat the snails.
