Day 3: The third bath in three days

Published: 11.08.2020

We started the third day early (around 10am) because it was going to be hot (or even hotter than before). Additionally, we didn't book breakfast at the hotel, so we somewhat fortified ourselves with the remains from Dortmund. Bad Salzuflen bid us farewell with a steep climb, which immediately consumed our spartan breakfast. Now, only the last hills of the western Weserbergland were left! We cycled through the fields to Vlotho, where we planned to have a late breakfast. Corn and sugar beets accompanied us. The wheat had already been partially harvested, some was still standing or being harvested, and some straw bales were neatly arranged in the fields. The ground everywhere was very dry and dusty, just like our wheels. In Vlotho, we discovered a ringing water feature next to pretty half-timbered houses, but unfortunately, our chosen cafes were closed due to COVID-19. Great! So we only got something from the bakery and crossed the Weser to Uffeln, somewhat refreshed. We continued between the railway line and the river, leaving the Wiehengebirge with the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal on the left and the Wesergebirge on the right, and we cycled through the Westfalenpforte into the North German Lowlands. That sounded relaxing for our legs! Nevertheless, it got hotter and hotter, and we stopped at Minden Station to get some cold drinks. After organizing the accommodation for the next two days somewhat spontaneously, we headed towards Bad Rehburg.

We continued through the fields and villages, passing an old windmill and new wind turbines. At Loccum, we picked some apples and pears that practically fell into our mouths. After one last up and down, we reached Parkhotel Bad Rehburg with the long-awaited shower. Since the hotel restaurant was also closed, just like in Bad Waldliesborn, we only had to choose between four pizza delivery services and relaxed on the terrace behind the house with vegetarian Turkish fast food specialties after these 73 km.
