Day 2: Off to the (De-)Gradierwerke in Bad Salzuflen

On the second day, we started after a very delicious breakfast at around 10:50am, a little earlier than the first day, yippee! Packing the bags went a bit faster. The tires still had good air, the dusty camouflage of our bikes was still there. Did we have air again? Yep, our legs and butts were feeling good! We initially rode on forest paths and tree-lined country roads, passing by a sanctuary farm with bathing geese. Many Marian altars (small buildings in the front gardens with Marian figures inside, name?) lined our way, a few crucified Jesuses also caught our attention. This region was clearly influenced by Catholicism. Around noon, we made a stop in Verl at an ice cream parlor and treated ourselves to 3 scoops each. A welcome cooling down! We continued, through rough terrain into the forest, along a herd of cows and Schloss Holte. Observant people might notice from the photos that we had already sacrificed our first victim, Jörg's sunglasses. Insects are to be sanctified for flying behind the sunglasses during the ride! We continued uphill, passing through the mountain town of Oerlinghausen at 214 meters above sea level (started at 76 m). There, we were able to watch some planes taking off and landing at an airfield. Really cool to see the ultralight gliders being catapulted into the air! After a short stop to purchase some cool drinks (Jörg boosted the Gatorade sales again), a nice long descent followed.

Between corn, wheat, and sugar beet fields, we continued through the fields. We made a final stop at a hemp field :) Finally, a final climb was necessary to reach the CheckInn Hotel in Bad Salzuflen, and then the second stage (around 6:15pm) with almost 70 km was completed. We ended the evening with tapas and cocktails, and then took a stroll to the famous (De-)Gradierwerke ;-) It's really salty there! Bad Salzuflen is overall a nice little town, especially in the evening with beautiful lighting that created a great play of light and shadow, and with the sound of water here and there.
