Sa Pa, Lao Cai

After an overnight stay at the hotel, we were picked up by Peng - the sweetest guide who was to accompany us on a trek to the villages of Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, and Ta Van. At first, it went quite well... but gradually we moved into an area where we were a bit challenged.

There were very narrow paths with a steep drop on one side, and the trail was quite muddy. I am still surprised at myself - that I did it. Fortunately, we were accompanied by several local Mung women, who literally gave a helping hand. It was quite embarrassing to see how easily they managed everything 😳

We were a group of young people - and then us, and at one point the group split up so the youth wouldn't be held back too much. Our group was assigned an easier route to the Homestay where we were to spend the night. The group gathered again to visit a private house, and we were even lucky enough to be invited to the guide's home.

Peng lives with her husband and child at her in-laws, as her husband is the eldest - and only - son in the family, and it is their duty to live with his parents until they pass away. Not exactly a dream for a 21-year-old girl who would like to have continued her studies at university. She learned English by following after tourists - since she became a mother with a baby on her back. Therefore, she is now able to get jobs as a guide - much to her father-in-law's dismay. Sweet and strong girl, whom we totally fell for.

The first Homestay hadn't booked us in, so after a cup of tea we had to hit the road again. We were accommodated at nothing less than Paradise Garden Homestay. Nice place with fantastic views, good and friendly service - the more cold-sensitive even got an electric blanket.

Before dinner, we were taught how to make spring rolls - we were very quick learners 😊 They also tasted really good!

After food and beer, we were ready to hit the hay - another trek awaits tomorrow.
