Italy in Spring Part 6.2 Ravello
Visit to Ravello and Villa Rufolo

Over two days, I explored Positano and Amalfi. I arrived by ferry from Salerno and took the bus back. According to Google, Positano has 3,678 inhabitants. Known as the 'Pearl of the Amalfi Coast,' it's so overwhelmed by tourists that I almost lost my desire to sightsee. I can't even imagine what it's like here in July and August. However, many hikers also find their way here, as one can hike from Positano along the 'Path of the Gods' to other towns on the Amalfi Coast.
Now that I've seen both places, I can personally say that Amalfi is just as beautiful but less crowded and much more charming. In Positano, I couldn't escape the streams of tourists unless I sought refuge in one of the many galleries. Thousands of people felt like they were sitting, standing, and walking in the narrow streets, taking photos of themselves and others. The usual posing girls with puckered lips were in abundance here. Not for me.
The next day, on the day of liberation from the Nazis, or from the fascist regime, on April 25, I went to Amalfi with a heavy heart. But, to my surprise, after just a few steps into the city, I could leave the tourists behind and explore the city almost alone. The town is full of nice details, and real people actually live here, whom you encounter in the narrow alleys. I ordered grilled fish at a small Osteria, much to the delight of the waiter, who seemed a bit frustrated with the usual orders. By the way, I frequently encounter raised eyebrows when I order a table for one while dining out. But then a kind of caring nature takes over, and especially the older waiters lovingly attend to me and my wishes. They pat me on the shoulder when they think I have made a good choice. They come by repeatedly and whisper nice things to me. Even if the restaurant is overflowing; they say, 'Sit down, Signora, and enjoy the wine, or whatever.' Some, like this one in Amalfi, take my hand and say things like, 'So nice to meet you.' I think they assume I am newly widowed or just divorced, as this happens almost every day. Quite funny, anyway.
The lemon couple gladly posed for the camera, even when I said I wanted to use the photo for my blog. They were pleased with the interest. Please also note their matching choice of shoes. Wonderful!
