Italy in Spring Part 6.1 Amalfi Coast - Vietri Sul Mare

Vietri sul Mare, Italy

After Naples, I traveled to the Amalfi Coast. Or rather, to Salerno. Generally, Salerno and Sorrento are considered gateways to the Amalfi Coast, but they are not part of it. The advantage for me was that I could easily reach Salerno by train and visit the other places from there by train, boat, or bus, although only Vietri Sul Mare can be reached by train. But more on that later. All the towns on the Amalfi Coast sell ceramics, but Vietri Sul Mare is home to the art of ceramics. I was even invited to a 'laboratory' when I entered a shop and apologized for not being able to buy anything. The shop owner proudly showed me his wife's workspace. Vietri is also a lovely town on the hillside, with many narrow and winding alleys, tunnels, and stairs. Sometimes I got lost in private courtyards and had to turn back. From the train station down and back up, you can take a lift. The lift shaft is decorated with blue tiles on which colorful fish seem to swim by while ascending and descending. The first two photos are from the 'gate' to the town. When you step out of the lift and go through a short passage, you are faced with a wall full of initially broken and then glued ceramics. All the shops and restaurants in the town are, of course, decorated inside and out with colorful tiles, and most businesses have tiles with corresponding motifs at their entrance. Only the church was free of tiles. It was a beautiful day in Vietri Sul Mare.
