Drive from Lakes Entrance to Eden

When we woke up today, it was pouring rain again. It was raining against our room window as if it were a car windshield on a highway. Reluctantly, we still set off. However, it was not long before we had to stop because a very large tree was blocking the road. The police could not say how long the clearance would take. Therefore, we took a detour through the nearby mountains (alpine route!). We actually wanted to see a few sights along the way. There were supposed to be some beautiful bays, a small island, a waterfall, and a national park. But it rained so much that we occasionally had to stop completely. As a result, we essentially skipped the stops and only took a few quick photos of Lakes Entrance and got an overview after arriving in Eden.

The Australians are generally quite pleasant drivers. They yield to pedestrians and other vehicles at all times. They drive pretty attentively. However, there are a few oddities. Most cars are quite new and have automatic lights and daytime running lights. Yet, most do not drive with daytime running lights, and in heavy rain, fog, or twilight, at least a third drive without any lights. Apparently, they consciously turn off both the daytime running lights and the automatic lights. When our car automatically turned on its lights in rain or fog, a large portion of cars were driving without lights. Our two rental cars also had daytime running lights automatically activated. So, it's standard on Australian cars. And of course, an Australian car has to be very large, with four-wheel drive and an air intake snorkel.

Today's stop is considered a very beautiful and popular holiday destination. The real estate prices confirm this fact. The town is located on a peninsula and is bordered by the sea on two sides. Eden is also a port that is visited by cruise ships. We are staying just outside of Eden in a large, castle-like hotel. It is called Seahorse Inn, and upon our arrival, we were served a cappuccino with seahorse decoration and a muffin.

The hotel has a wonderful, huge garden and its own bay. From there, you can also see the town of Eden. We had a good hour without rain and used this time to explore Eden and the surrounding area. Now it is pouring rain again, but we are back in the hotel.
