During our first trip to the USA about 30 years ago, we visited the Hopi Reservation, but apart from the sales area of the Cultural Center, we had no contact with the residents and the land.

The Hopi's way of life, worldview, history, and religion are something special, quite foreign to us, yet fascinating. A description would far exceed the scope of a blog – there is no time for deeper philosophical reflections during the trip, so I can only refer to the extensive literature and the information about the Hopi available online.

Also, the literature should be referred to regarding the Hopi's perfected dry farming of corn and beans and other crops. For the Hopi, their way of farming is an important part of their culture and plays a central role in their lifestyle and heritage.

Regarding the Hopi's relationship with visitors, Wikipedia writes:

“The Hopi's attitude towards tourists is very reserved, but polite. A visitor center at the start of the reservation politely points out that further travel is technically not necessary but fundamentally allowed. However, photography, filming, and drawing in the villages and in certain areas of the reservation are strictly forbidden. Since 1911, it has been prohibited to photograph the sacred ceremonies of the Hopi.”
