Burnt Tourists
Hello again! Jetlag has set in and we were awake until 3 a.m. 👍🏼 Friday started like the days before with a shift at the clinic. Somehow, there was a vibe of things going wrong:...

What an eventful two days it has been! Let's dive in:
Yesterday, we had the day off and decided to take a trip to Silk Island, a small island in the Mekong River just outside Phnom Penh. The Mekong currently has a lot of water due to the rainy season, causing the houses right by the shore to be submerged.

Just a 5-minute ferry ride (for only 0.11€ per person) and we were able to choose a bike from the various rental stations.

A lady offered to take us to her family, who has passed down the knowledge of silk production through generations and still knows how to weave by hand. We gratefully accepted this offer and learned so much about the production process and how long it actually takes to create a piece of clothing: for example, a regular skirt takes a full 7-10 days, depending on the pattern.

After that, we wanted to explore the island on our own and just drove around. We encountered significantly less commotion, tiny villages, and a lot of sunshine. And cows everywhere on the road 😅
Just before the end, we came across a small jungle area where there was an old abandoned event hall with a stone walkway leading to a viewpoint over the Mekong.

After our really tough bike training, we finally arrived at a lovely little restaurant where Feli tried the excellent Amok.

Today was all about work again. The day started with patients waiting at the door when we arrived, and it didn't get any quieter. Around 9 AM, two more interns arrived, and we were supposed to divide tasks with them. There were so many patients waiting that two more folding chairs were set up so that check-ups and small treatments not requiring electricity or water could be conducted.

When the last patient was finished, we were all quite exhausted. We went home, relaxed a bit by the pool, and swam a few laps (which means we completed two out of three disciplines of the triathlon) and went out to eat in the evening.
We hope tomorrow will be a bit quieter and we bid you goodnight!
