At 4:30 a.m. our bus left San Jose for San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua. The pace is moderate, it just takes a long time to cover a short distance. Shortly after 7 a.m. we checked which route we had covered using Google maps. We were shocked to realize that it wasn't even 100km. The Costa Rica/Nicaragua border crossing in Peñas Blanca is adventurous but thank God we had enough support from the bus company who told us what to do. First of all, leaving Costa Rica (which costs $8 🤷🏻♀️) it is important to get a stamp as proof of departure. 1 kilometer further then enter Nicaragua, entry into the building costs $1 per person. Entry costs another $13 per person. Then we did it and our first stop in Nicaragua is the surfer's paradise of San Juan del Sur.
Our hostel was a little out of town, so we decided to rent a scooter. That was very adventurous 🙈some of the roads are not particularly well developed. (Some forest paths in Germany are better) The path led past a garbage dump where garbage was burned 24/7. At night the entire area was lit up in red 🫤
Over the next few days we drove to various beaches, and we liked Playa del Coco best. Surprisingly, two other people were there alone 😍 we looked at the world's second largest statue of Christ the Redeemer at sunset and had a drinking day in the hostel 😅
Since the waves in San Juan del Sur are perfect for surfing, we took our first surfing lesson 🏄🏽♂️ It was a lot of fun but also extremely tiring, abrasions and bruises were inevitable.
