Cascate delle Marmore and Pitigliano

On our way north, we want to visit the Cascate delle Marmore. They are the highest man-made waterfalls in Europe. As I read, they were used for irrigation as early as 700 BC and later for energy generation.

The route to the selected parking spot proves to be difficult. GPS is out, and data too, we drive the wrong way, turn around, and do it the way we did before. We follow the signs. Then we're not where we wanted to be, but we have a huge parking lot all to ourselves with a note from a nice employee: No pay.

The next day we want to see the waterfalls and go for a little hike. Komoot has something on offer. Easy and 6 km long, just 190 meters down and up. A piece of cake!

The descent is steep and rocky at first. I don't like it at all, Jürgen doesn't mind. In the valley, we're told that nothing is allowed without a ticket. Ok. But it really is a beautiful facility. Even if the water flows only lightly. The real big water flow is manually started and in February, of course, only on weekends.

Then we have to go back up the 190 meters. About 1000 steps. Jürgen doesn't like that too much. But it was nice after all 😀😀

After that, we continue on, as we want to meet Irene and Eckart in Saturnia. The plan changes to Pitigliano. A beautiful ancient little town. After the city tour, we indulge in the dolce vita with an aperitivo.
