After breakfast as usual, a short city tour today through El Calafate....
Then departure to El Chaltén, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. A beautiful drive, we had to stop frequently to take in the wonderful sights of the area. 215 km past Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma. And then about 65 km before our destination today, the first stunning views of the mountain 'Fitz Roy', a 3406-meter-high granite peak, known in the language of the Tehuelche Indians as 'Chaltén', meaning “the Smoking” because of the clouds often seen at its summit. Today, the nearest village is named El Chaltén. Fitz Roy is the main attraction in the Argentine National Park 'Los Glaciares'. And 'Cerro Torre', this mountain is considered one of the most difficult yet beautiful summits in the world among climbers.
Finally, my long-awaited destination: the ascent to the viewpoint at Fitz Roy. A 9 km hike, with an elevation gain and loss of over 400 meters. A wonderful trek through the jungle of the national park, passing several viewpoints overlooking the landscape and the 'Las Vueltas River' until reaching the famous 'Mirador Fitz Roy'. Every meter of ascent and descent was worth it for this view. Despite the strong wind, I had to stay there for almost an hour and simply enjoy. I will never forget this path!
Tonight, along with two beers (which I surely deserved), a sandwich and then off to bed at the vacation house 'Pitihue Aparts' - my bones ache, but I am very happy - Buenas Noches!
