Explorations at the End of the World

Today we had a bit of peace after breakfast until lunchtime. Then a visit to the Catholic Church of Puerto Williams (My uncle had said a mass here). From the outside, I wouldn’t have recognized the church; here it still represents ideals, the Chileans are a very devout people, and here the church is not a wealthy enterprise. The communities lack financial means to maintain or even build places of worship. However, the citizens band together and take care of the entire parish collectively.

After a short lunch break, we set out towards the west, towards Puerto Navarino, a port of the same name - nothing going on, dead silence - but still a very beautiful spot.... once again Over more than 120 km, we encountered no soul.... and once again a wonderful landscape always along the Beagle Channel (how could it be any other way ). We made a brief stop at the Cementerio Indegenas (Cemetery of the Indigenous) in Bahia Mejillones, where the dead of the Yaghan were buried at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Since the Yaghan were considered heathens by the western conquerors, there are no crosses in this cemetery....

We also couldn’t pass by the 'Puente Lum', the last bridge on the 'Routa del Fin del Mundo' (Road at the End of the World) without taking a photo.

At 8:30 PM dinner at Bistro del Sur. On the way home, then a strange encounter in the middle of the small town, on the sidewalk across...... A bull was strolling through the city late in the evening. No, it wasn’t a police officer - it was a real bull - and we had only had three Cerveza Austral....
