Along the Nam Ou River - to Muang Ngoi and back

We had planned to travel almost to the Vietnamese border. Bernd, who took this boat trip with his family, reached out and seriously advised us against it. The regular boat that departs from Nong Khiaw stops in Muang Ngoi, and passengers who want to continue must settle for a small boat, sitting closely on narrow wooden benches, for 5 hours to Muang Khua. The hotel there is described as 'just okay'. We think about it for a while, but the decision ultimately comes easily: We shorten our route, taking the boat only to Muang Ngoi and staying there for 1 night.

Here, in Muang Ngoi, everything is a bit simpler, quieter, and more laid-back. While Nong Khiaw has become a place with fancier accommodations and a starting point for group tours, the backpacker scene gathers here in Muang Ngoi. Many young backpackers seeking authenticity - and thus paving the way for tourist development. This was already the case 35 years ago and will remain so. We realize that we are no longer cut out for 'very simple' traveling. Our accommodation, rated quite well with 8.3 points on booking.com, was okay for 1 night but overall quite borderline for us. Nothing to spread out, feel comfortable, or engage.

What surprises us in the morning in Muang Ngoi is the rain! We are traveling with light luggage, our suitcases have stayed at the hotel. Of course, we packed everything necessary. Obviously, what else 😉. Except... for the rain ponchos. The thought that it might rain never crossed our minds. Just a day before, the sun was shining 😅. That's how it goes; it won't happen to us again!

We returned dry, now enjoying the wonderful bungalow in Nong Khiaw, we spontaneously decide to minimize our radius of movement and prepare for the onward journey.
