Roches de Condrieu

If we had skipped the harbor of Roches de Condrieu on our way south, it was due to the distance to Lyon that we made a stop. There were about 115 km and 5 locks to Lyon, which we didn't want to face against the current.

While the harbor doesn't have the best reviews, after refueling and docking, the harbor master's original words were "just find a spot you like", which we did, and our assessment changed.

As there was little wind forecast for the day after next, we decided to stay a day and explore the area a bit; we had our sights set on the vineyards above Condrieu, as that was our intended trip.

Vienne would also be a worthwhile destination, but that succumbed to pollen allergies.

The bike route to the vineyards was described with very steep ascents, which we had experienced already, so off we went. However, what awaited us was unexpected. We drove into a narrow valley along a small stream. Initially, we were still on a paved road, but it ended in the yard of a beautiful estate.

After I left my tracks there on the well-kept gravel, my first officer did not follow me at all, and the question arose: what is actually the way? We quickly realized that we needed to cross the creek over the bridge, and then we followed the worn path. At first, this was comfortable, but it became increasingly narrow, and at times we could not ride and wouldn’t have been able to turn around either. Ultimately, we turned back.

On the second attempt, we ended up on the alternative route at the local cemetery, but the path was so steep that even my first officer had to pedal.

On the third attempt, I then pretended to the GPS that we were in a car, and we drove on the road. We were rewarded with a great view in all directions of the Rhône Valley.

The vineyards extended into a second level leading to the mountains behind them; as far as the eye can see, grapes are cultivated. On the way back, we stopped for coffee in Condrieu.

Upon arriving at Gustav’s, we let the day wind down and prepared for the onward journey, as a longer stay is planned in Lyon.
