In the morning, we visit a market in Dunedin, then continue the journey through Middlemarch, Kokonga to Ranfurly.

The area around Ranfurly initially thrived during the European settlement of the country through agriculture, with the vast plains of the region primarily used for sheep farming. During the Otago Gold Rush, where gold was found in Ranfurly and especially in Kyeburn and Naseby, near the southern side of the Kakanui Mountains, gold seekers came from all over, leading to an economic boom in Ranfurly, which eventually resulted in its connection to the country's railway network in 1898. The line was closed in 1989, the route was developed into the Otago Central Rail Trail, and later a museum was established in the remaining station that also provides information on the Hyde rail accident that occurred in 1943.

The Hawke’s Bay earthquake of 1931, which destroyed nearly the entire city of Napier and was later rebuilt in the Art-déco style, also inspired Ranfurly to adopt more earthquake safety and construct buildings in the Art déco style.

In 2013, the town had a population of 663, which is a decrease of 6.8% compared to the 2006 census.
