A part of Uckermark at the other end of the world

Those who want to go to Prenzlau must primarily head west, through Marburg and Minden; those coming from the south will likely pass through Templin. This is the case, at least, if...

Of Stopping. Or: Australia Day – between pleasure, pride, and open wounds

I recently heard from various sources that my restlessness was noticeable and seemingly increasing. I gathered that some were worried about my energy reserves and my internal...

Pearl Harbor Memorial on a Budget

The Pearl Harbor Memorial is considered a must-see for anyone visiting Hawaii - at least that's what the internet says. And so do the advertisements at the airport, in hostels,...

America in a different way? - By train from Minneapolis to Seattle

Those traveling by train through the almost empty areas of the USA mainly see vastness and a huge and yet beautiful nothingness. No skyscrapers, no crowds of people or cars, no...

Link to my StoryMap about DPs and Australia!

What else do I do besides writing and sitting in archives? Here’s some self-promotion for a project related to one of my research findings: StoryMap Getting Away from War and...

The turkey is out! Or: When America stands still

The USA is about commerce and capitalism. I don't like it, I feel uncomfortable, it all doesn't quite resonate with me, nothing new (see for example here). By chance and yet...

To take away. Quite easy!?

The best travel advice ever: Just use a small piece of luggage!

The Katyń Museum. Or: Insider tips for Warsaw

A great place to reflect on the history of World War II from a non-Western perspective.

The Regensburg Ganghofersiedlung. Or: Bavaria's little Ukraine

Regensburg should be called the westernmost city in Ukraine.

The New Zealand Haka of the Māori in Italy. Or: Remembering in Monte Cassino

Actually, I don’t like large commemorative events or memorial sites. This may be confusing, because it is my field of work. But maybe that's exactly why. What I don't like is...

Of Chinese-Jewish history. Or: The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum

My actual destination in Shanghai is the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. If it hasn't been made clear before: yes with an exclamation mark! My theme takes me around the world...

From 36 hours Shanghai

Left my independence for safekeeping at the airport!

Tawharanui Regional Park

Great for hiking and especially for admiring birdsong.

Te Henga (Bethells Beach), Piha and the Mercer Bay Loop

Of cliffs, black earth and sand like chocolate!

My absolute favourite: Mangawhai Cliffs Walk

This is the trail you want to walk if you are in Auckland and have a car!

Adelaide, the city of sunsets

My feeling on the ground tells me that Adelaide is quite underrated.

The Melbourne Holocaust Museum

Wow! Of new exhibition standards!

About accents and Melbourne, the Hamburg of the southern hemisphere

Complex identities, ambiguities, people with more than just one origin are also on the trail here.

Open doors

I think I have the answer to my question about what excites me so much about this region!

Of focus, will and perseverance. Or: What (my) work (maybe) has to do with surfing

How the current moves you forward, how the waves can be felt on, and even more in, the body.

From the Illawarra Polish Museum in Wollongong. Or better: From Zu-Falls

“Something like that is definitely hard to come by! There’s a lot of things that don’t exist in Australia!”

Von Bolek, Stanisława - und Agnieszka

"That would somehow be a conclusion, maybe even the end of my search."

About leaving and arriving. Or: My way to Sydney

Why keep running? The surroundings are just too beautiful!

Of history and what remains. Or: What else I wanted to write about Canada 2/2

Dear universe, if there is something there, I am a grateful “buyer”. :D

Of light and shadow. Or: What else I wanted to write about Canada 1/2

Almost three months in Canada and (almost) once through the entire north of North America.

West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island - What a trail!

... falling asleep by the water with the sound of waves and waking up again, feeling my feet until they are numb, having my backpack on my shoulders.
