Future in Aarhus

Published: 05.07.2023

The DOKK1 is the central element of the project to transform the inner harbor of Aarhus from an industrial area into a urban area. The new waterfront areas are now an important link between the city center and the Baltic Sea. The centerpiece is a new library - Scandinavia's largest and most modern. In addition, DOKK1 houses a citizen service, a café, community spaces and workplaces, an indoor and outdoor playground connected to a children's book library. And much more. Everything is very large, with plenty of space and exciting views of the former harbor area.

DOKK1 is also (allegedly) the largest parking garage in Europe. One of the main concerns was to provide enough parking spaces to attract the public. Due to space restrictions and the location of the building on the harbor wall, a conventional parking garage was not possible. The space-saving system from Lödige provides almost 1,000 parking spaces on four levels below the building.

In order to connect the new urban area with the existing city center, a new tram line was built. During our first visit in 2017, much was still under construction, but some things have now been completed. Not everything is convincing, but what is not yet, may still become... Of course, there was a lack of the wow factor compared to our first visit 6 years ago, but it was still exciting to see.

By chance, the royal yacht Dannebrog was docked at the pier in Aarhus on this day. Otherwise, Aarhus offers the usual: a large brick church (unfortunately not open) and many small shops and boutiques in partly picturesque alleys.
