We wake up early at 8:00 AM. Andreas is already fully dressed, while I quickly take a shower. We first head to the sea and take a few photos. It would be too far to walk into the city center, so we take the car and drive to Seaside Bakery for breakfast. Again, there's only a vegetarian option, which has an enormous amount of egg – it was impossible to eat it all. We then walk along the harbor to the visitor center, where we get some really great tips on what to see. In Crescent City, there’s a rescue center for injured and orphaned seals and sea lions. They currently have 4 patients that you can view from the outside. At the harbor, there’s also a historic lighthouse on a rock that can only be accessed at low tide. We can observe California sea lions and dark squirrels, which seem to be adapted to life at the harbor. Then we set off for Redwood National Park, home to the tallest trees in the world. The drive there is an adventure in itself. Andreas navigates the car through meter-thick tree trunks until we reach the parking lot for the hiking trail “Grove of Titans”. I take over parking in a gap of about 15 meters. Hiking through these giant trees is impressive; these are coastal redwoods, the tallest trees in the world. The trail is only 1.7 miles long, and we also see a hummingbird, dark squirrels, and chipmunks. A Humboldt marten even runs across our path. However, we can’t spot any yellow banana slugs, but we do find a plant called Trillium, which, according to a ranger, only blooms every 7 years. The communication with the ranger was somewhat awkward – she approached us with the question of what we were doing there. Our answer was: We are visiting the national park. This led to an awkward silence, which I tried to fill by telling her about the animals we had observed. The giant trees have been the most impressive experience of our trip so far. By taking a longer detour through the park, we make our way back to Crescent City around 5:00 PM. Andreas wants to walk along the beach and look out at the sea, and I prudently brought a book with me, which I could read sitting on an old tree trunk in the sun. Andreas returned hungry after 2 hours, so we headed to Burger King first. I got a sandwich at Subway. Just in time for sunset, we made it to a viewpoint, where we enjoyed our fast food dinner with a view of the red setting sun over the Pacific Ocean.
