After our second night in Crescent City, we pack our backpacks again, as today we are heading to San Francisco. We grab something for breakfast and head to the harbor to enjoy a few quiet minutes in the sun. Then we take Highway 101, which leads us along the ocean directly to our destination. Even our hotel, Seaside Inn in S.F., is right on this highway.
Andreas is back at the wheel and keeps affirming how fit he feels as a driver. But 50 miles before S.F., he gives up, and I have to take over. We are currently stuck in rush hour traffic with countless cars, but there's a lane on the left for vehicles with 2 or more passengers that has priority. Luckily, I have a (sleepy) co-pilot. Cars with only one passenger are not allowed to use this lane. So we still make good progress and drive over the huge red Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco. Andreas has woken up just in time to film this epic moment.
Upon arriving at the hotel, we receive our room and walk to the harbor towards Fisherman’s Wharf. We pass through a park filled with countless people engaged in sports activities. Although we are quite far south now, the windy chill makes it quite cold. We resolve to dress warmer the next day.
At the harbor, we stroll past numerous souvenir shops and fast-food restaurants. There is also a colony of sea lions that can be observed up close. Andreas asks me why the sea lions smell so strong – my explanation that it's because they don’t wash leaves him with a disturbed expression...
After extensively observing the sea lions resting, we walk to the Ferris wheel and get tickets to view S.F. from above. So far, we have used several Ferris wheels on our travels: London, Miami, Singapore, Seattle, and now San Francisco.
It’s time for dinner, and today we’re having pizza for a change. We each grab a large slice and take it back to our hotel room to eat in the warm bed, as we’re quite chilled by now.
I also book a boat ride for the next day, and then we fall asleep.
