Mount Hillaby, East Coast and Oistins Fish Market

Today we first headed to the center of Barbados. Mount Hillaby was our first destination, the highest mountain in Barbados (340 m) :-)

The highway turned out to be a narrow road with potholes deep enough for a Smart car to get lost in. Without damaging the axles, the maximum speed was about 20-30 km/h. At the 'summit,' we briefly entered the jungle and then chatted with a young man who gave us freshly harvested sugar cane to chew on. It was very sweet. Like all the locals, he was incredibly friendly. Afterwards, we headed to the Atlantic coast at Bathsheba. Great rocks in the strong Atlantic surf. Really very impressive. Nearby is the must-see Andromeda Botanical Garden. Entrance fee is 15 US$, but it is definitely worth it. Unfortunately, we had neither US$ nor enough Barbados Dollars (we had previously paid about 70 BBD = 35 US$ for three chicken wings, two colas, and yams fries). The woman at the ticket office couldn't handle Euros at all; she had never seen them. But a quick phone call and the information from a friend resulted in her accepting 30 Euros from us for entry. She looked at the bills and smiled, saying it looked like play money.

On the drive back through the countryside, people continuously greeted us pleasantly. It is a nice friendliness and not at all pushy, completely without ulterior motives. Very relaxing.

In the evening, we went to the Oistins Fish Market, which is bustling on Fridays and Saturdays. People everywhere, music everywhere, and freshly grilled fish everywhere. It was a bit too much hustle and bustle for us, and our landlord Kent advised us to go there on Sundays to enjoy good fish in peace.
