The main attractions of Erfurt are naturally the overwhelmingly prominent Roman Catholic Severi Church and the Gothic-style Cathedral.

Furthermore, Erfurt boasts a beautifully restored, medieval old town, which includes the famously mundane Krämer Bridge (the longest continuously built bridge in Europe with half-timbered houses). It is filled with people at all times of day and night strolling over the cobblestones to admire the unique shops.

Notably, the Citadel Petersberg is worth mentioning.

Before the takeover by the Emperor in 1663 (imperial ban, the outlaws were condemned to death in effect, Erfurt was declared to be in a state of draconian lawlessness), a Benedictine monastery was located on Petersberg. During the GDR era, the buildings were used for state security purposes, among others.

In the Middle Ages, Erfurt reached its economic peak with about 20,000 inhabitants (currently 214,000), primarily due to the woad markets. For example, dye-woad, indigo blue, was very valuable.

Later, horticulture and seed cultivation gained particular importance. That is why the Erfurters are also fondly referred to as Puffbohne.

March 1970 marked the beginning of the German-German rapprochement as part of the Eastern Policy.

Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Willi Stoph, met at the Erfurter Hof hotel across from the main train station.

Erfurt is characterized by cozy pubs and fine restaurants almost always with a historic flair. Not to forget the Thuringian bratwurst, the name itself paired with a wonderfully chilled Braugold, Köstritzer, or Erfurter Angerbräu.

All in all, Erfurt is worth a visit and remains the city where I grew up.
