Kleinwalsertal or the Lech Valley? ...the cows are part of it!

Both valleys are easily accessible from North Rhine-Westphalia. According to Google Maps, it takes about 7 hours, depending on which town you want to go to and when you get up.

The geographical conditions make the Kleinwalsertal, with about 15km in length and 6.5km in width, seem almost cozy compared to the Lech Valley, which stretches 75km in length and 20km in width.

The Breitach is a 21km long mountain river that springs from the Kleinwalsertal and flows into the Iller. The Breitachklamm is known as a special natural monument and is one of the unique geotypes of Bavaria.

The Lech, with its 256km in length, flows into the Danube and is known as the last wild river in the Tyrolean Lech Nature Park. It impresses with its jade green color, a result of a high mineral content and low water temperatures. The mountains in the Kleinwalsertal range between 1900m and 2300m and are often still covered with grass, such as the Fellhorn or the Ifen.

In the Lech Valley, the mountains rise between 1900m and 3000m, making them comparatively barren, rocky limestone Alps. The Paseierspitze, at approximately 3000m high, is well known.

Tourism in the Kleinwalsertal is highly frequented and this only works with very good logistics. Whether it’s chairlifts or gondolas that are constantly maintained, the via ferratas, iron ladders, and steel cables are intact and sufficient. The Walser Card is an additional bonus for visitors to use free buses and cable cars.

Tourism in the Lech Valley is increasing as well. The Lech Cycle Path from Reutte to Steeg, as well as the Lech Trail for hikers, is complete from Formarinsee to Füssen. The Jöchelspitzbahn was newly built in 2019 and is free with the Lech Valley Active Card.

Also, the regional buses between Steeg and Reutte, as well as the side valleys, are free with this card.

What is always a focal point in both valleys... are the beautiful, sometimes frisky, sometimes stubborn cows.

My conclusion: I find the Kleinwalsertal to be more lovely and sheltered, while the Lech Valley feels more authentic and challenging to me.
