The Grand Canyon was formed by the collision of the North American and Pacific tectonic plates. This led to the uplift of the Colorado Plateau about 50 million years ago. The Colorado River, flowing from the Rocky Mountains, carved its way through the uplifted rock layers over millions of years, creating the Grand Canyon. It is tinted reddish-brown due to the red siltstone or loess and slate, with a significant amount of iron reflected in the rock.
