Calico Ghost Town in the Mojave Desert of California was established due to silver deposits discovered in 1881. The buildings are partly made of clay and water, which provides some fire protection. Towards the end of the 19th century, the price of silver fell, and the town was abandoned. Today Calico has the character of an open-air museum of an original settlement.

San Francisco was named in honor of St. Francis in 1847.

The Gold Rush of 1849 also triggered a rapid population increase here, transforming the city into a commercial center.

In 1906, an earthquake devastated the city.

San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, as reflected in the Beaux Arts architecture of the City Hall and the COIT Tower, a landmark.

In 1936, the Oakland Bay Bridge (beautifully illuminated at night) and in 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge also a landmark, were opened.
