Our trip today began early in the morning in Salamanca – shrouded in dense fog that made the city look mystical. Already in the first few kilometers, it became clear that we were on a route heavily frequented by trucks. The bustling traffic on the highways contrasted with the ever-changing landscape that accompanied us.
The further north we drove, the more varied the surroundings became. Just before we left the AP1 highway to switch to the AP68, the route took us through an impressive mountain landscape. The rock formations here are unique – like natural sculptures shaped by time. We also passed through several tunnels that gave the feeling of being truly in the mountains.
With the AP68 came tranquility. The toll road is almost empty, allowing us a relaxed onward journey. The landscape here presents a different aspect – hilly forests as far as the eye can see, interrupted by smaller valleys.
The scenery feels calm and picturesque, almost like a harbinger of what might await us in Bilbao.
After the peaceful drive on the AP68, our route now takes us through the Parque Natural de Gorbeia. The autumnal atmosphere here is impressive. The trees shine in warm colors, from yellow to orange to red. The fresh air and cooler temperatures – it’s only 12 degrees – emphasize the feeling of having truly arrived in autumn.
About 25 kilometers before Bilbao, we reach the province of Bizkaia. Here, the route changes again, quickly descending, and with the exit, it also gets a bit warmer. The weather, however, remains gray, giving the scenery a certain drama – a fitting prelude to our upcoming arrival in Bilbao.
After a varied drive through the autumn landscapes of northern Spain, we have arrived well in Bilbao. Our hotel, the Vincci Consulado de Bilbao, is located right next to the famous Guggenheim Museum – and thanks to a Black Friday offer, we secured a room with a stunning view of the Ría de Bilbao. The arrival was straightforward, even though we had to take our car back to the garage via the lift, just like at the last stop. Unfortunately, it is raining, but that hasn’t stopped us from exploring the city.
After a short break at the hotel, we set out on foot along the Ría towards the old town. Our first stop was the Iglesia de San Nicolás, a beautiful place of tranquility amid the hustle and bustle.
Next, we headed to Plaza Nueva, where we enjoyed a selection of delicious tapas in one of the cozy bars. I tried a glass of Cava, while Hampi chose a white wine – a perfect start to the evening.
From there, we wandered through the streets of the old town and reached the festively illuminated Plaza Arenal, which offered a wonderful festive atmosphere.
Our walk continued past the impressively illuminated Udaltxea (Town Hall)
and finally to the Zubizuri, an elegant pedestrian bridge that is beautifully illuminated even independent of Christmas. Its modern design and the lights reflected impressively in the water of the Ría de Bilbao.
Finally, we reached the Ponte La Salve, which with its modern architecture provides a great contrast to the historical old town.
Before heading back, we treated ourselves to a sweet break at Don Crêpe, where we enjoyed a delicious crêpe. We then walked across the bridge to the Guggenheim Museum to take some nighttime photos of Puppy, the famous flower dog. An impressive sight that leaves you wanting more – tomorrow we plan to visit the museum extensively.
Now we are winding down the day at the hotel bar with a glass of wine. It was a lovely first evening in Bilbao, and we look forward to everything tomorrow will bring.
