From Mérida to Albufeira, Algarve

Published: 12.11.2024

Today we leave Spain heading towards Portugal, more specifically to the Algarve. We are driving from Mérida to Albufeira, a distance of 415 km that passes through Seville and offers many interesting impressions.

The journey begins in the region of Extremadura, known for its wide landscapes and nature reserves. Extremadura is one of Spain's 17 autonomous communities, with Mérida as its capital. The Extremadura region covers 8.3% of the Spanish landmass but has only 2.6% of Spain's population, with a low population density of 25 inhabitants per km².

Leaving Mérida

On the A-66, we see vast fields, olive groves, rolling hills, and occasionally small villages. The calmness and expansiveness of the landscape create a relaxed atmosphere, as this route is hardly busy.

Extremadura

This changes when we arrive in Andalusia. The closer we get to Seville, the more evident the Andalusian culture becomes. The surroundings become greener, and the typical white houses of the region are often seen here.

Andalusia

After crossing the border into Portugal, the landscape changes once again. The Algarve is known for its coastal landscapes, sandy beaches, and Atlantic climate. Part of the route leads through gentle hills.

Border Crossing

The drive across the border has a certain charm, as we can pass between the two countries without passport control. Portugal welcomes us with a new language and different traffic signs.

In Spain, most of the highways were free. 20 kilometers after the border, we encounter the first electronic toll station. The stretch from the border to Albufeira costs us 2.95 euros. This is affordable for us, but a significant amount for the Portuguese. Therefore, the Algarve motorway is hardly used outside of the tourist season.

The weather is fantastic, and the thermometer in the car shows 25 degrees. It gives a good feeling; the coastal vibe sets in as we approach Albufeira. We know the Algarve well; it feels like coming home.

The drive from Nottwil through France, Spain, to Portugal offers a unique cultural contrast. We deliberately chose to make the journey by car. It was a good decision, as we have seen and experienced a lot.

We are happy to be here and are looking forward to the next 3 weeks with relaxation, hoping the weather stays as beautiful as today.

Our Apartment

We settle into our apartment, go shopping, unpack our bags, and simply enjoy being here.
