A Day in Lagos: City History, Street Art, and Pleasure

Our day began in Lagos, a charming harbor town that immediately enchanted us with its historical flair and vibrant streets. With pleasant temperatures of 20 degrees and bright sunshine, we were able to enjoy the city in all its splendor.

Lagos is not only known for its beaches but also for its rich history. Particularly impressive is the well-preserved city wall from the 16th century, which once protected the city from pirates and intruders.

Walking through the old city gate, the Porta de São Gonçalo, one can almost feel the stories of past eras. It is a beautiful testament to military architecture that marks the entrance to the picturesque old town.

Opposite lies the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, a fortress from the 17th century, which also once protected the harbor and the city from pirates. The fortress is a classic example of military architecture of that time. It is relatively small and compact but equipped with strong, thick walls.

A special architectural detail of the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira is the four small towers at the corners of the fortress. These towers, reminiscent of medieval castles, were originally lookout posts from which soldiers could keep an eye on the sea and the surroundings. Their round shape and tiny openings offered protection from attackers while simultaneously allowing for a good view. Today, these bartizans give the fortress a charming and photogenic character.

The small exhibitions inside tell stories of the maritime history and the adventures of Portuguese sailors.

In addition to the historical highlights, Lagos is also known for its vibrant street art scene.

In the winding alleys, one discovers colorful murals that tell stories from the city's maritime past to modern themes. The art adds a modern touch to the city, turning every stroll into a small adventure.

While strolling through the old town, we noticed something special. Many houses are clad in artistic ceramic tiles – the so-called Azulejos.

These blue-white or colorful tiles often tell stories or serve as artistic decoration. Other facades shine in vibrant colors such as pink, yellow, or blue, making Lagos a colorful Gesamtkunstwerk.

For lunch, we stopped by Meu Limão, a cozy restaurant that impresses with fresh, local ingredients and a warm atmosphere. The menu was a wonderful mix of traditional Portuguese dishes and creative variations – a true delight!

After the meal, we wandered through the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town, passing small boutiques, galleries, and cafés. Lagos has a very special atmosphere that invites you to forget the time and simply let yourself drift.

The perfect conclusion to our outing was the drive back to Praia da Coelha, where we enjoyed the sunset. The beach glowed in warm orange tones while the sun slowly disappeared behind the horizon – a truly magical moment.

For the evening, a visit to O Marinheiro is still on the agenda. But sometimes things don't go as planned. Our planned stop at our regular haunt suddenly fell through as it had closed a week earlier than intended. But the alternative turned out to be a hit! Instead, we ended up in a charming Italian restaurant and enjoyed a delicious dinner.

We started with a bruschetta topped with fresh tomatoes, aromatic basil, and a hint of garlic – simple, yet incredibly delicious. For the main course, we opted for classic pasta: I had creamy spaghetti carbonara, while my husband chose the spicy version with penne all’Arrabbiata. Both dishes were perfectly prepared and full of flavor.

To finish, we treated ourselves to a sweet highlight, panna cotta with pistachios and ice cream with fresh strawberries, along with two strong espressos – or bicas, as the Portuguese say. To round off the evening, I enjoyed a refreshing limoncello.

This spontaneous detour into Italian cuisine was a delicious surprise and a perfect conclusion to our eventful day.
