Meteora Monasteries Greece Day 23

What was supposed to be a small round trip around the Meteora monasteries turned into a challenging, non-Komoot compliant, extended hike in 32-degree heat.

We started after a 2-hour journey and breakfast on-site at around 11 AM, with the plan to be back at Beppo by 2 PM. But that didn’t happen; it was 4 PM before we returned to the starting point.

What happened? Actually, nothing much, just that we didn’t take the mainstream route, choosing detours to special viewpoints of the monasteries instead,

had to avoid closed paths, and most importantly, the search for land tortoises, which took quite a bit of time.

After sighting the first turtles, Tina couldn’t be held back; her gaze was fixed downwards. It was just like in Holland, where shark teeth were searched for, or in Denmark, where amber was sought on the beach. And indeed, she discovered a total of 14 wonderful specimens of 🐢s during the tour, each more beautiful than the last. All of them will be featured in this report.

At our last break, just before Kalabaka, a full-grown wild boar walked right past us with its dinner.

As we were back at Beppolino after nearly 5 hours, there happened to be a gyros restaurant right across the street, so we went in. It was heavenly.

After the feast, we deviated from our original plan and drove only 20 minutes to our resting spot for the night

in Vlachava.
