Do you know the fairy tale 'Momo'? Then you also know the street sweeper Beppo. When he had to sweep a long straight street, he didn’t look to the end but divided the street into manageable parts. This way, he had a sense of achievement each time he cleaned a section. By the end of the day, the entire street was clean.
In a similar way, for me, a day trip is structured. Today’s 101 kilometers were divided into many segments by Komoot. Komoot tells me at the beginning how long each segment is. I usually convert that into percentages. And so I proceed piece by piece until I reach my destination. In a way, I am a bit like Beppo and feel happy every time I accomplish a segment.
Moreover, I admire how precise Komoot is. Even during planning, I learned that my trip today would be 101 kilometers long. Since I didn’t have to take shortcuts or detours, my odometer also showed 101 kilometers – all counted from the many individual segments.
If I wanted to exaggerate, I could say that today was a rainy day, as forecasted. In total (generously speaking), I felt three raindrops. Then the sun often shone, and the temperature rose to 12 °C. In short, an ideal day for cycling.
Today’s ride was very diverse; I also had to pass through a big city. Do you know the song from Vicky Leandros 'Theo, we’re going to Lodz'? That's precisely the city I got a fleeting look at today. Compared to Warsaw, there are significantly more bike paths in Lodz, so the 20 kilometers quickly passed by. This city has many parks. I saw two; in the first one, the avenues seemed endless, and there was no noise from the city to be heard.
I also had to endure some kilometers on loose ground. However, like yesterday, it was much easier to ride on than those in Lithuania or northern Poland. Countless kilometers of cobblestones were also announced. I only saw a few real cobblestones. Therefore, I believe that slabs or those smaller, prefabricated, interlocking cement pieces are also called cobblestones since otherwise, they wouldn't fit onto another substrate.
I took my lunch break again in front of a church. It’s quiet there, there are seating areas and trash bins. Today, there was even a portable toilet! So it was an ideal place!
