Saturday / Sabato, July 4, 2026 – Day 7
Initially, I slept very poorly and then quite well until 8:30. We spend the morning on the terrace: Coffee, reading a book, making paninis, snack, writing a blog, and taking a siesta (actually Riposo in Italy).
At 2 PM, we head to the beautiful and relaxed city of Lucca. Parking is reserved, and we start at the Duomo di San Martino. A lovely church that is not too overcrowded, but still costs €5 for entry. In all the churches we visit, it’s not as cool as expected; instead, it’s warm and often very humid. Well, it fits that the nice restaurant Undici Undici is right here in the square. And the square is called Piazza Antelminelli (so if Franz Antel is with Liza Minelli, it must be something special).
Time for Negroni and Fanta. The kitchen takes a siesta, so we leave the fountain with the chief seagull and head towards the 45 m high Torre Guigini. Delicious gelato licked on the way, and up to the tower, one of the most accessible to climb. At the top, it’s very pleasant under the holm oaks, so we linger for a while.
Then I ignore Lisa’s navigation instructions, and somewhat late, we circle the oval square: Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Tragic how such a beautiful square is stuffed with tourist traps and completely devalued. So just a quick look and we move on. Over the magnificent city wall back to Undici Undici.
It’s simply lovely here. View of the church and fountain, shaded, airy, and a pleasant crowd. Vino bianco, tartare di tonno, Sicilian pasta, coffee, I could sit here all day until late at night. But we have an appointment:
Jamiroquai at 9 PM. An amazing concert, the audience knows the lyrics, the show is tremendous. At 1 AM, we fall into bed, sleeping until 11 AM the next day.
