Pisa 2026 - Day 4

Wednesday, July 1, 2026 – Day 4

Wake-up call at 7. Departure shortly before 8, as we only get the caffè at the meeting point in Carrara. Not so fast! We are stuck in traffic on the highway before Carrara, and our 30-minute buffer time is melting away. We park 5 minutes late and jump into the already waiting Land Rover Defender, and off we go to the marble quarries.

Spectacular and recommended! Lots of information about marble extraction then and now (roughly cutting with a saw below and using a diamond rope to cut out the block on the left/right), a small Lardo snack in between, and an entry into an underground marble quarry. Huge halls in the mountain and beautiful steep descents into the last corners.

After 3 hours, we are spit out at the car again. Dehydrated and hungry, we search for the Lard Rock Cafe in Colonnata, but end up at Mafalda's. We eat and buy Lardo in all variations and are back at home base by 4. Ready for a short round in the pool and some relaxation.

The wind freshens from the sea, there is a huge lightning in the distance near Livorno, the cicadas are noisy, but it is pulling over Livorno inland, and we have the same kitschy evening mood again. Dinner and winding down the day until 11.
