On the road again - Backpacking in Peru

Here we go again :)

After a wonderful wedding in Stiftschmiede, during which we looked back on our experiences with the people who have accompanied us on our journey so far and celebrated a truly exuberant wedding, we set off for Peru on Tuesday morning, after recovering from a hangover (let me just say: 49 bottles of red wine, 150 beers, 200 Aperol/Hugo - and we were not that many people drinking 😅).

Backpackers 4 life :-P

As expected, one backpack didn't arrive. However, as seasoned backpackers, we had the foresight to divide our few pairs of underwear between us, so for the first few days, I only experienced the advantages of traveling light without any other odor-related side effects 😜

First stop: Lima. 10 million inhabitants, a big city, noisy, lots of traffic... so there wasn't much to keep us here. What we didn't fully realize, however, was that during the winter months (June to September), there is a persistent fog here. But our first culinary forays into Peruvian cuisine (Chaufa, Ceviche & Pisco Sour) have already convinced us :)

We continued along the coast to the surf town of Punta Hermosa, where we faced the waves of the Pacific Ocean for the third time. The first two times were in Nicaragua and El Salvador - the main difference being that the outside and water temperature was about 20 degrees lower :) Fun factor just as high :)

Next, with sore muscles all over our bodies and in search of more sun, we headed to the national park near Paracas.

There - you won't believe it - I let Matthias convince me to go on a bike tour again. But the impressions were definitely worth it!

You can also explore the reserve, which provides habitat for dozens of birds, sea lions and penguins, by boat. By the way, the name comes from sandstorm or "paracas", which are typical here.

After these high-seas adventures, we first visited the oldest winery in South America, "Tacama," and tasted our way through red and white wines as well as Pisco Sour.

Right now, we are in the oasis of Huacachina, on the edge of the Ica Desert. A backpacker hot spot - and we're right in the middle of it :)

Today, we're continuing our journey in the night bus to the mountains to Arequipa, from where we'll start our next adventures - for example, the descent into the Colca Canyon, the third deepest canyon in the world.

So stay tuned - more to come soon!
