A little taste of Lima
We are so excited about our next country on the bucket list: Peru!
The start has already been successful, as we find the Peruvians to be super nice, organized, punctual, and lively. We land in Lima on Friday evening and dive into the chaotic weekend traffic with the taxi driver, and after a good hour we arrive in the beautiful district of Miraflores. Our acquaintances from Berlin are already waiting for us here, with whom we can stay for the next few days - Thank you, Weneta & Jan!
We spend three wonderful days together, mainly playing with the children, chatting about Peru and Germany, strolling through the city, and enjoying Lima's fantastic culinary scene. By chance, we manage to get a table at the restaurant "Kjolle", run by Pía León, who was named the best chef in the world in 2021. She uses only 4 ingredients for each dish, but combines them in a unique interplay of textures and flavors. This food simply makes you happy! But even the home-cooked meals here are simply heavenly, so we indulge in Lomo saltado (a type of stir-fry), Causa (a layered dish of mashed potatoes, tuna or chicken, with egg, mayo, avocado, and whatever else comes to mind), and of course Ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime juice with onions and chili, served with sweet potatoes and corn). Not to mention the national drink: Pisco Sour! You can probably tell that we will gain a few extra kilos before we return to Germany... ;)
In addition to the delicious cuisine, Lima also offers some beautiful small markets, and we also visit the MAC, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and stroll along the promenade with a view of the vast ocean. Here, numerous surfers and paragliders take advantage of the wind and waves along Lima's long coast.
Another special experience was attending a campaign event for the upcoming municipal and regional elections in October. We ended up in this situation rather unintentionally, as we assumed that it was actually a dance event with different bands and show acts. The Peruvians look at us rather puzzled, as we are clearly the only foreigners here. After dancing a bit of salsa, we decide to retreat to more touristy areas...
So back on the plane and off to northern Peru, where we want to enjoy the beaches and see some whales 🐳 See you soon! ✌️
