Annoyed by Chinese people watching movies without using their headphones, we headed south towards Nanning. Again, a six-bed compartment in the night train. Again, constantly observed by curious Chinese people - even at night. Wonderful.
When we arrived in Chongqing, our transfer station, the next morning, we noticed that our connecting train to Nanning was supposed to depart from the other end of the city... Great. A Chinese person we had met on the train kindly offered to show us the way to the train station. However, our initial gratitude quickly turned into frustration when he led us up a staircase with 300 steps (considering our luggage) following his phone to take us to a subway station that also had an entrance at our arrival station. After the Chinese person guided us through the city, we reached a futuristic train station that was about the size of the Hamburg airport terminal and the Hamburg main train station combined. From there, we continued on to Nanning.
Nanning... Nanning is interesting if you like big cities without much character. Nanning is a big city, nothing more and nothing less. Besides a great food market where you can find all kinds of seafood specialties like turtle, crab, and octopus, there is nothing in Nanning - at least nothing that you wouldn't find in other big cities. The incompetence of ATMs and hotel staff didn't exactly sweeten our stay.
